I like to cook this chicken curry very often. The reason for that it is damn easy to make and you don’t have to spend a lot of hours to make this delicious dish.

  • 1 3/4 lbs or 750 gram of chicken pieces
  • Cooking oil
  • 1/2 cup of finely chopped onions
  • 1 1/2 cup peeled and chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger paste
  • 1 tablespoon of garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon of garam masala or allspice powder
  • 2 tablespoons of finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 4 whole red chillies
  • 3 bay leaves
  • A piece of 1-inch cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 2 teaspoons of coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of ground red chilli
  • Salt to taste


  1. Wash the chicken pieces in running water twice then wash it gently using a kitchen towel so the moisture get away from the chicken pieces.

  2. Take a blender or a food processor and add whole red chillies and coriander seeds to make a coarse powder. Transfer this to a bowl and set it aside.

  3. Use a saucepan and heat oil on medium flame. Add the cumin seeds, bay leaves and cinnamon. Roast it stir often until you smell a great fragrance from the whole spices.

  4. Add the chopped onions and stir fry until the onions turn golden brown in color or gets translucent. It takes approximately 6 to 7 minutes.

  5. As soon as it turns golden brown in color add the ginger garlic paste and stir continuously fry until the raw smell goes out from it.

  6. Add the reserved spices powder and mix it well. Fry the spices for a minute or two then add the chopped tomatoes and on medium flame cook it until the tomatoes turn soft and tender.

  7. When the oil starts separating from sides add the ground red chilli with chicken and salt. You can add the water depending on desired gravy consistency.

  8. Cover and cook the chicken for next 15 to 18 minutes or until it comes to your desired consistency of gravy. Check the seasoning.

  9. Now finally, add the garam masala powder or all spice powder. Mix it well. Cook it for another 1 to 2 minutes then turn off the flame.

    Garnish it using coriander leaves. Serve it hot!

Recipe Notes

For a variation or to have change in taste you can add fresh thick yoghurt at the final stage of cooking and simmer it until it mixes well with other ingredients.

You can also add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice for making the chicken a tangy flavoured dish.

I have learned and made a lot of chicken curry recipes but they all need a long process to go through. That is why I prefer this easy chicken curry recipe that is a very comfort food for me.

When I like to eat something which is easy to make on a tired day, I go for this well traditionally cooked easy chicken curry dish.
